How to interpret PR?

Hi Everyone!<br>
Might sound stupid, but I want to know how to interpret PR. I have site with a PR 6/10. Is it good enough considering that the site is a big one (www.indianyellowpages.com)? A rival site has the same PR, but ranks higher at google, apparently because it surpasses mine in back links. Apart from back links, does 6/10 imply that there is a problem with the interlinking of my site? If I improve PR, can I beat the rival site?<br>
Fathom, are you around?<br>
-Maneesh.

Maneesh, PR is one of the factors that contributes to why a site is higher then the next.

There can be many reasons why your site ranks lower than your competitors if your PR is equal.

Maybe they do a better job of coding there site for those keywords. (titles, text, h tag usage, title tag, alt, bold, and linking).

It goes on and on.

Smile Interpretation of PR

Thanks RB!

But at least this much I know. What I want to be explained is how do I interpret a PR of 6/10? Is it good, average, or poor? What's the best PR? Also, I have a lot of outbound links at my hom page, some of them don't link back. Do they affect the PR?

A descriptive answer please; I'm a greenhorn, you see!

-Maneesh.

It's above average for normal site, for a large directory it's quite normal. Most website's see a PR 4 or 5. Getting PR6 requires a bit of work / luck...

If we use toolbar figures it's 10/10. Examples of these sites are Apple.com, sun.com etc.

However, toolbar value is only a rough estimate that catogires values between 1-n into 10 classes. Your real PR might be something like 54022. There's no way to find it out exactly.

Yes. Every outgoint link reduces the PR witch goes into inner parts of your site. However, It's not that simple. If some of those pages that do not link back to you, have links to 3rd pages which have a link to yoursite, you get your contributed PR multiplied.
