How long until new site gets pagerank?
Hello everyone...
I was wondering how long does it take for a new site to get its pagerank calculated and displayed. I have launched my new site 1 month ago and still no pagerank. Still same old gray line... Google crawled all of my pages around two weeks ago and freshbot visits every few days. When will I get to see the pagerank? Thank you. |

This is all dependent of when Googlebot Crawl your pages.
If you see in your logfiles Googlebot 2.1 with a referral IP with the first octual block 209 (or 207) then you will more than likely get ranked (and PR) this update. If only Googlebot 2.1 IP first octual block 64 then this is Refreshbot and unlikely to be in the next update (thus no PageRank)

Let's try again: Google has to types of bots (we will call them "googlebot" and "Minty"). Googlebot is the month crawler that visits your pages and indexes them for display around the end of each month. Googlebot is actually many many different bots (a mini programme) and associated with a specific Internet Protocol address (IP) as in the displayed link. You will note that all Googlebot crawlers start with a number such as 209.
http://www.searchengineworld.com/spiders/ip_addresses/google.htm If your logfiles (if you have access them) show 209.185.108.163 get/ and page then you will be in the next update... in this case your PageRank will be calculated. Minty on the other hand is a refresh bot "minty fresh" which goes around grabbing pages that have recent changes "e.g. newly edited pages" so that the most relevant (recent stuff) is always added to the results mix. If your logfiles shows 64.209.181.52 Get/ page Minty has visited. However, minty is not associated with the standard month update therefore PageRank is not calculated. So if a 209.185.108.163 (or another one starting with "209" is in your logs then your pagerank will be calculated when the update appears - probably in a few days. |

"The world needs more people like you".
Thanks but really - as an ex-submariner -- we ate our dead, and stewed their bones for leftovers... as such, you really DON'T want more people like me. |

I launched my site on 4-27-02 and it showed up in a Google search (on the domain name) on 5-08-02. However I did not get a PageRank until the beginning of July (PR 3). The rank went to 5 in Sept with only half a dozen back-links. In February it was demoted to 4 without losing any back-links that I'm aware of. In March I gained a few good incoming links and went back to PR 5. Go figure. Andi |

Pagerank can take a while, and come and go along the way - you do not say what you have in the way of bl's, you might not get ranked at all without some decent backlinks.

fathom.....great summary. Now I know that each night it is "minty" that is visiting me and not doing much in terms of bandwidth etc....and therefore not moving in the rankings.
What is the timing of Googlebot? Will we see him/her b4 the end of May? A certain day? I want to be ready!! P.S. - How did those stewed bones taste?? ![]() |

If you have no robots.txt the Googlebot and others will proceed as normal. They check only to see if you have barred them. If you do not want to regulate robots you don't need the file.

Thank you fathom, I don't know the difference before,
but after I checked my log, I see no 209.185 and 64.209, is this bad for me? |

in some cases this isn't true. for example, our site didn't get fully indexed or properly catagorized by Google until we included the robots.txt file in our main directory. and besides it is a very simple thing to do. to allow all bots access to index your site: 1. create an text file 2. include the following chunk of text in it: User-agent: * Disallow: 3. and save it under the name robots.txt be sure to have the file in your main directory with all of your other pages

Since it won't do some bad with an empty robots.txt, just create one and leave it there
