High or Low PR
How can you tell if a PR rank is high or low? eg. If I have a PR6 site how do I find out if it's a low PR6 or a high PR6?

The PR scale is exponential and while noone knows exactly what the factor is, most believe it is roughly 8.
In other words a PR6 has 8 times the PR of a PR5 which has 8 times the PR of a PR4, and so on. So, when people speculate on high vs. low, they are looking at the PR of subpages of the page in question. For example, if you had a homepage with PR5 and it had 20 links on it with 10 of the links being internal links, then it is going to pass 1/20th of its PR to the 10 internal pages. If the internal pages are PR3, then this could only be possible with a low PR5 page. IF the subs are PR4, then the PR5 is medium to strong. Conversely, let's say you have a PR5 homepage with a total of 6 links and all are to internal pages. If all of these internal pages have a PR of 5, then the homepage must be a high PR5. The above examples assume simple site structure and most/all PR from external sources hitting the homepage directly and not the subs. Obviously, not all sites are this simple, but it gives you a general feel for how people speculate on low vs. high PR. Last edited by nmalhot : June 4th, 2004 at 11:11 AM. |

One of my sites is a PR6. It has 6 main pages, all PR6, and a number of sub pages(not linked very well at the mo), PR5 and PR4. There is only one external link the rest are internal, so that would mean I have a reasonably high PR6?

Yes, good explanation by nmalhot.
This would mean your PR is medium-high. But still try working on getting higher PR backlinks. One can never have too many backlinks.

Celcon,
It is really hard to say without having more in-depth knowledge of your backlinks (i.e. which pages do they point to) and also your internal linking structure. Whenever these disucssions start someone always chimes in with "Who Cares?" because SERPS are all that matter and PR is not the only thing dictating SERP performance. And, as noted above, the important thing is to keep adding backlinks and keep optimizing PR flow to the pages you are keying for in the SERPs. But still, I'm with you in that PR is a nice quick visual feedback for all your hardwork in building up your site .... it is nice to know you're making progress from low PR6 to high PR6 when the journey to PR7 can be long! If you post the URL we may be able to give you a better educated guess. There are certainly no absolutes when it comes to PR. |

What would happen if I suddenly added an extra 50 pages to the site? Would the new pages get a PR6 or would they be lower because there would be more pages?

Unless you have some more external links aimed directly at them then your pr would be lower because they would "share the wealth" from your existing pr pages...
If you link to them from your index you would probably find that your existing main pages (currently pr6) would decrease to pr5 (or even lower)... On the other hand - think of all those extra keyword phrases you could add to your site
