First, I completely understand why most SEO's are not concerned with PR, and rightfully are concerned with SERPs. I also agree how PR has little to do with SERPs (PR1's can beat PR5's yadda, yadda). LAstly all the misconceptions about PR being important.
However there is one point that I think many are missing about PR and why it can be important.
When you have a high PR, it is easier to get SERPs, especially for new phrases that you introduce. You can do less SEO (need fewer links with phrase anchor text/less on site optimization to get SERP results. You still need to do those things (with or without high PR), but it comes easier. IF you don't have high PR you can still get great SERPs, but High PR helps it even more.
I only make this statement from what I have seen (and my experience is limited). But I have a 9 month old site with a PR5 and when I even add a paragraph about a new topic, it seems to get picked up and put on page 1 of Google, even without adding any new inbound links with that anchor text/changing title tags, etc.. I believe if I didn't have a PR5 I would have to do more to get the same SERP for the new phrases I target.
I have seen other high PR sites in my niche (whom I am friendly with and exchange SEO dialog with) that add some text ( a paragraph on a new topic) on their site <and will immediately beat out other established sites SERPs for the same phrase (without adding any traditional SEO.
Again, I agree PR is not important for the reasons here bring it up and it has nothing to do with SERPs, but it does make your SEO job easier in getting SERPs once you have high PR.
Lastly as I mentioned in another topic about PR, I believe that in the long run high PR will enable you to stay on top easier. With each algorithem change and Googles change on what's important to them (i.e. links, blogs, articles, videos, 2.0, twitter, and the next generation we don't know yet), the old becaomes outdated and no longer important and you have to refocus your SEO campaign. I believe with high PR you get more leeway and are able to keep higher SERPs thru thick and thin.
For the record, I don't focus on PR, it just comes by only linking with and from high, trusted, relevant sites in my category, and by not associating or doing anything even on the fringe of being a short cut.
In short PR is not as valuable as most think, but it certainly helps get SERPs easier and stay on top. IF you can get high SERPs without great PR, super you don't need it. But high PR can help and does make your SEO job easier. Just my opinion from what I've experienced.
