Google and subdomains
Some articles have hinted that sub-domains are treated like different sites when it comes to calculating Google PR and result pages.
Does anybody have some insight on this? Last edited by bling : September 7th, 2004 at 07:59 PM. |

Sub-domains are domains and are like individual sites.
You just have to be carefull how you link the domain with the sub-domains. |

Woah, this is news to me. Are you suggesting that if i have a home page and 5 sub-domains, all links in between them are considered external links by Google?
If so, would it make more sense to incorporate all pages within the domain and eliminate the sub-domains? I am somewhat new to this, so excuse this question if it obvious, but..... Which would Google give a higher overall PR throughout the site : 100 pages all under one domain or 100 pages spread out through 5 subdomains? Thank you for your help,

Question for Jocelyn
Jocelyn, do you have any experience with this.
I have a site with two subdomains. The domains and two subdomains all have similar content (all represent chess teams playing on teamchess). Since subdomains are relatively new it is too early to connclude whether it will be possible to target same keywords on all three. High SERPs not a must for these three but I would like to learn more about runninig subdomains for more serious purposes. Shannon |

1- Yes 2- If it's to make you look like a bigger site... maybe. Depends how you are doing now. 3- This is determined by incoming links and your site link structure more than by it's size. |

I do not use subdomains. I prefer to increase the size and work on only one site. Just search a bit on this here and you'll find lots of info about it. |

Here is an article about a Googlebomb that says very briefly mentions that it might be possible to get a google bomb just using sub-domains. This is why the topic was brought up.
