Does google punish forum pages?
Just read about this in some other forum. (able2know)
Somebody said Google reduces the PR of pages in forums, and several guys confirmed. I wonder whether this is actually true? and why would google really do it? it's meaningless! Also, this arises an important quesion! How does google know it is a forum? does it punish any file called viewforum.php, or does it really try to guess from the structure of the pages themselves? |

Forum SIGs do not give a lot of PR weight to your pages.

I disagree...
A friend of mine posts a lot on slashdot, and his personal home page has a PR5, with no inbound links other than from his slashdot post.

Slashdot has mega PR.
I agree with Joc (and SEO Guy) - Google counts 2 links or 2000 links from the same site as just 1.5 links. From any site - doesn't have to be a forum. There is no point in thousands of links from the same site. Just to prove the point I'm leaving out my sig on this post. More important than PR - Can we sort out these smilies please. SEO Bob sorts his smilies in less than 24 hours. We've got a lot of lame ones here. Last edited by VORD : June 30th, 2004 at 05:12 PM. |

I thought slashdot signatures are redirect links, not real text links.

I have seen them as real text links.. I get PR from it.

It may not provide PR, but it does attract the spiders so helps to get new pages crawled quicker. My personal opinion is that it should not provide PR, it's not logical, but then the world is not always logical. They can tell a forum from another site easily enough

Thanks for the replys... I can't see why you think it shouldn't provide PR? Assume the whole world is talking about say, Doom3, they will usually put links in their talk to the good pages talking about it. They are putting links to the best pages about the topic, and Google should favor those pages linked to from more topics... (because they are most probably the best) probably signature links are the ones who should be ignored, but it is probably quite hard to differentiate between the two I don't think Google should ignore forum links altogether just becaue of sig links! (or at least, that's what i hope for! I am sure others also hope for the same thing!! ;) ) |

Yes it is true.
It's a waste of time to post on forums if you only want PR. Much better to spend time exchanging links or submitting to directories etc. |
