Choosing Keywords

Hi,

Lets say I want to position my website for any key words chosen, after working some time with the wordtracker, adwords and googledance tools.

Lets say I chose "downlodable movies" . For those key words the site in the second position in google is: www.ecommercetimes.com/perl/story/2273.html (with the title: E-Commerce News: MGM and Blockbuster To Offer "Downloadable Movies") . This domain has got 2 backlinks, but the domain www.ecommercetimes.com (with the title: E-Commerce Times: the E-Business and Technology Super Site) has got 659 back links.

To rank second for this key words, should I get for my site more than 2 backlinks? or should I get for my site more than 659 backlinks?

If the anwer is 659 backlinks, why doesn´t google show for this search the main domain (www.ecommercetimes.com) ?

PD: trying to learn all the theory to apply it on my site.

It has nothing to do with the quantity in this case its the quality. although having many backlinks to your page with your anchor text in it is "VERY" important a vote from ones own PR 8 index page to an internal page is a "VERY STRONG" vote work on getting overall pr to your entire site via quality link partners, keep adding content pages and use those content pages to link to your "downloadable movies" page with the phrase in the anchor of a good old fashioned html link

What you mean, is that I sould use my secondary pages to link back to my main site as much as I can, using the anchor text?

Would the old fashion link look like this:
<a href="http://www.mysite.com/">Downloadable-Movies</a>.

almost I dont mean link back as "much as you can" 1 link per page back to the index with this format <a href="http://www.mysite.com" title="downloadable movies">Downloadable movies - home</a>
You put the home in there so as to not confuse your visitors, but if you dont care about user friendliness the njust use downloadable movies without home

But returning to tha main isue, how can I stablish the amount and the quality of the links I must get pointing at my site to get it in the second position for the key words "downloadable movies"

Are there no rules at all?

There must be a combination between quality and quantity.
