Not worth the time
It's not worth your time to do black hat techniques, your site gets banned and if Google wanted they can even ban related sites that you may own even if those sites are legit white hat techniques.

In my views, why to take chances if you want to dominate search engine rankings for a long time and have authoritative business. Its something like even when you know that stealing is illegal and still you do it thinking, you might become rich if you are not caught. But how many times it happens? Once caught, search engines might penalize your site or can completely de-index it once for all.

It all depend on how you are using things. I know many sites which are ranking very high on google using black hat method and not getting banned after a very long time.
