Are you out of the Sandbox?

If your website is out of the sandbox, It may be useful for others who are still in the sandbox to monitor when the site was first crawled and the lenght of time you spent in the sandbox - to try to build up a better picture of this update.

Crawled for the 1st time: March 2004
Time spent in Sandbox: 11 months
Position on SERPS for main keywords: 2nd, 3rd and 2nd
    Position before update: <10000
    Keyword is in URL: No

My (older) site qualified* for sandbox-ness (?) for specific keywords. The '05 superbowl update definitely gave me a boost. Site's been up since autumn 2003. Position for my main (regional) phrase has been #1 for a long time, but for this (one-word, now without the city name ;) ) keyword I came up 150th, then 75th, now #10.

The keyword is not in the url... or better put: my entry page that HAS the keyword in the url (but few backlinks) ranks nowhere, but the main page that happens to have a decent number of specific backlinks now ranks page 1

FYI - I did NOT get me loads of links... Just the odd one here and there, and one forum sig for backup

My guess is that moderate link building is very important nowadays.

I didn't work much on this site, about 6 months old. It was in >1000 and now It is around 60. Looks like it came out and time to work on it.

The site was launched in October 2002 and quickly climbed to page one. Then Florida happened and I got knocked out cold. I have been slowly coming back but have been unable to get to the top 30 even with non-competive phrases. I was clearly being held back for months on end. I started to see some improvement early in January due to an agressive link building campain and the Co-Op network.

NOW: Most hold #1 and #2 (almost all I track are in the top 20)
    BEFORE: 50% of my keywords were #40 - #150 (the other 50% were #500+)
    Keyword in URL: Yes

Crawled for the 1st time: late March 2004
Time spent in Sandbox: just over 10 months
Position on SERPS for main keywords (2-word phrases): 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd (plus lots of keywords I didn't even think of in top 10 ;))
    Position before update: page 3 - 100s
Keyword is in URL: keyword 2 in URL

Iv'e also noticed that by using -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf -asdf
has no effect and one of my sites is not in the search at number 2 as it was before, its totally gone. After waiting nearly a year for one of my sites I think I will forget google now and focus on MSN and Yahoo who list my sandboxed sites - it's not worth the effort and fustration or the time wasted on checking rankings. What a waste of time, to pursue something that will not happen for at least 11 months.

Only our sites that were launched prior to July 2004 have come out of the sandbox. Site launched from July 1st 2004 onwards are still sandboxed.

Assuming that the sandbox is applied to sites with competitive terms could you perhaps set up a new site with topic related & not so competitive keywords and then over time (assuming you weren't sandboxed) introduce the competitive keywords?

I'm not sure it is only applied to sites targetting competitive terms.

The terms I'm targetting return less than 70,000 results in Google, but my site is very deep in the sand.

I suppose it all depends on the definition of "competitive" .

Maybe the competitivenes of a term is relative to the other terms targetted within the same site?
