    xml sitemap vs html sitemap

My sites do well with an html site map although google webmaster tools rejects the html site map.

Do I need to have an xml Sitemap? where would I put a link to it on my site? an xml Sitemap is not much use to a person browsing my site.

You don't need an xml sitemap if your site is indexed well. It serves no real purpose.

Apparently, Google knows how to find your pages without the sitemap, which is good It proves you have backlinks that are powerful enough to get your website crawled (entirely?) and ranked... Congratz

Never had to use an XML map to get my pages indexed the same or next day... HTML map can at least be useful for visitors.

HTML Sitemap is used by people find to content on your site. You should have one to
help people find what they are looking for. This can also be crawled by the
    search engines

XML Sitemap is designed for robots from the SEs. People do not use this to find the content that they are
    looking for.

IMO You should use both for your site.

If your site is fully indexed you do not need to add an XML sitemap, however it is good practice to do this any way.

You do not need to place a link anywhere on your site, a standard mydomain.com/sitemap.xml and submitting it to the search engine is acceptable.

The main reason the XML sitemaps protocol was introduced was to help sites get URLs indexed that weren't easily reached through normal links on a site - such as searches or form driven data that generates either new URLs or highly dynamic URLs and delivers significantly different content. For such cases, XML sitemaps are excellent, for most static sites they are not required but are still recommended.

If you have a large site, without an XML sitemap it can be pretty difficult to know how your site is being crawled and indexed.

If you have just a few pages its pretty easy to check.

OK fine, but what happen to a website which is properly indexed and adds new URL's regularly. How new URL's will get index without a sitemap.

XML sitemap is a added feature and even Google has introduced in Google Webmaster Tools. Do you really think that this is not so important.

Why Moderators of this forum don't really like to add a sitemap, see this

Search engines don’t accept Sitemaps in html format. Although, if you are not submitting it and just placing it in your website, it will crawl your Sitemap.
To make it simpler, search engines are capable of crawling html Sitemaps but don’t accept html format in webmaster tools.
