Would google automatically associate different forms of keyword that I optimized for?
For example, If I optimize around the word "quirkiness", would google automatically also rank me for the word "quirk", even though I dont have any optimization around "quirk"

I don't have any experience with quirks... but google does associate photograph with photos, images, pictures, and even pics. I see lots more on my sites. But it is stronger to have some incidence of these words on your page than to leave everything to google.

When it comes to Google... think THEME instead of just keywords. Google looks towards relational text. If your textual content is relative to your keywords, IMO, you will do better in the Google SERPs for your keywords and possibly others.
