    Worst Mistakes

While we wait for the dance, I thought I would bring up the topic of worst google mistakes. What are some of the biggest changes that you made to a site and quickly regretted?

My biggest mistake was a random generated picture program. Google gave the random generated picture a high rank for a popular keyword. I got 200 people clicking on a link from Google and getting a page that had nothing to do with the Google description.

Other big mistakes include session ids and configuration parameters in the URL, and the typical infinite calendar gafaw on my site. Occasionally a robot reads the calendar for 20,000 months into the future. I finally capped the calendar off so it will stop when there are no longer any events.

Hm, I find the random-generated image feature to work well for us with Google - it keeps the freshbot satisfied, because every time it comes back, the page has changed.

I guess the key is that overall the content remains mostly the same.

Worst thing I ever did was just abruptly rename a page that had a high ranking for several good keywords, upon which google killed the listing until deep crawl came by again.

Wow and an angry come back from "The Watcher" I thought this was a friendly board.

I didn't even know what SEO was until 2 weeks ago, when requesting links another webmaster turned me on to this site, so I would love to hear mistakes so I can try not to make them.

P.S. How much longer until I get a bullet next to my name, I'm tired of being a back ground lerker

Just saying perfection can't be achieved. I would say life is boring if you are flawless. But you got offended so nevermind.

    Thanks Watcher,

Not to get even more off topic but the board you belong to is that special board that you need to be a member of to view? I tried to visit but it asks for a password right away. Just trying to gleam as much info as possible from everyone.

Well things are getting kinda rowdy in here.

I am taking off where Confiden left off.

You are right ... Google and users like random and dynamic content on pages. Randomly sending people to URLs is a different issue.

Another blunder I've made is with Next and Previous buttons. I often have a query string that looks like "id=this&action=next".

The idea make sense from a programming perspective. Rather than wasting resources figuring out which item is next when I generate a page, I simply generate a URL with the current page id and a comand to go to the next page in the list. That way, I only resolve the next page when someone requests the next page.

This approach saves resources since people don't always go to the next page. The idea makes even more sense for sites with rapidly changing content, as the next page might change between when I generate the page and when the user presses the next button.

The problem is that my clever design creates two paths to the same page. That is: "id=9&action=next" has the same content as "id=10".

I've found the id=9&action=next link listed in Google. It is a really bad problem when I insert a page between 9 and 10. Suddenly id=9&action=next goes to the wrong content.

[Better to kill a site and lose the bullet next to your name]

Worst thing I did was not to put a robot exclusion against my server logs stats, and have them get a higher rating than my site. Although from what I see, this seems to be a common problem, especially when searching for robot names.

Next was going around changing the file names of pages [with random generated names from Front Page] to more meaningfull names, after the search engines had found and indexed my site very nicely. Took months to recover from that.
