Words Don't Count - Use FEWER Words

Google seems to think that less is more.
ELIMINATING any WORDS that you may have on your index page, seems to result in top positioning. Most of the words (information) on the following sites are presented using Graphic Images, NOT text.

Here is a list of the top 10 for my #1 search pair - keyword1 keyword2.
Note that this pair got a 78 score from the "Hitlist"... severely punished.
The figure in the middle is the number of TOTAL words on the page,
    as counted by
    http://www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/kwda.cgi

    Rank-Site-Words-Backlinks
    1- r - 0 - 75
    2- b - 34 - 202
    3- w - 28 - 66
    4- sw- 20 - 203
    5- ss - 1 - 45
    6- b - 15 - 79
    7- sc - 3 - 24
    8- y - 54 - 266,000 (yahoo portal, utterly irrelevant)
    9- k - 45 - 75
    10-ss-20 - 24 (Phillipino portal, utterly irrelevant)
    11- p - 20 - 24

Average words per page = 22 ... twenty freaking two!
    Interesting? I thought so.
Especially since I have hundreds of words on my index page (rank=#16).
Conclusion: The less words that you use, the more relevant you become.

If this is not upside down, inside out, and BROKEN, I don't know what is.
Relevance based upon LACK of WORDS.
The almighty dollar has rendered Google totally blind, as well as stupid.

Alta Vista and All the Web currently deliver far superior results, IMHO.
And MS? Totally whacked out. Incomprehensible SERPs, IMHO.
MS is certainly no threat to dominance in the near term.

Have YOU noticed a similar pattern in your top Google SERPs?

not here... at least not for my root keywords... these SERPs are dominated by PR... I didn't make first page until I had PR7 (and everybody above me has PR9/PR8... and they are all extra wordy... 100 word minimum and most have lots more... five listings on the first page are .gov sites

... these SERPs might not be representative of your point since all of the sites are the same way. There are no "few words" sites in reasonable distance below that have competetive PR

My main keyword SERP has 9-PR 5 and 1-PR 6 in the top 10.

(I spent 25 years in the newspaper business so you'll have to take my word for it when I say I know what legitimate editorial content is.)

Only three of the top 10 in my SERP have any real content...and they have only a couple of sentences. The rest is all links (outgoing).

I am a PR 7 with 16 paragraghs of copy about the keyword. Ranked number 36.

I have been wondering if content is being penalized. BTW, the same principle applys to all my the money keywords. I have 1700 pages on my site and do fine (top 10) for non-money keywords.

Not being a webmaster or SEO, I have no idea what this means, but thought the info might be of interest.

After 2 replies, it looks like 50-50.

Are you talking about a commercial site?
Are the terms you are referring to on the Scroogle "Hitlist"?

    on-the-level
    "... content is being penalized"
Yeah, that's kinda the feeling I get.
It just doesn't seem quite right.

    Not seeing this at all.

To me, it seems the number of backlinks has quite a bit of weight, and the anchor text has less. Many top sites seem to be ranking on PR and volume of links alone.

I'm not an SEO expert but I don't agree at all.

Since I have increased the content on my homepage using my keywords I have jumped to the 1st page using some very competitive keywords.

Another thing which has helped is increasin backlinks. To me the basic things work, title, content, backlinks.

I don't think it is wise to jump to conclusions based on a couple of results. Everyone is getting different results for different ideas and it is all going round in circles.

I think this needs a unbiased controlled scientific approach from a very experienced person to gather reliable information.

    Any takers?
