Why old sites have top ranking?

Just wondering... My site is to do with Ayahuasca. We offer retreats in Bahia, Brazil, and I've been working on/experimenting with SEO for months now.

For various searches, including "ayahuasca retreats", "ayahuasca retreats brazil" etc ... my site ((www dot know-thyself dot org)) has been appearing between the 2nd and 5th page.. Fine .. I'm happy with that and still working on it (objective: Page 1!).

But what I don't understand is that a page that hasn't been updated, and it seems is completely discontinued, always comes up before mine, on either page 1 or two (aya-aya dot com)

Any ideas how this can be? Thanks

If I understand you right, you would have to look at the age of the domain, the actual URL compared with your keyword phrase that you searched on, the content on their page, the number of backlinks to their domain and to that particular page (plus a host of other stuff). Somehow you have been beat by one or more of these metrics. You can compensate, however, by boosting metrics you have control over, specifically on-page SEO and backlinks.

It's because that old domain has been established already. In few more months or years, your site will be the same as well.

Updated content doesn't guarantee page one either. The older the site, may have that many more inbound links, Google likes tried tested and true domains. There are numerous factors besides the other guys site being older than your own.
