If I understand you right, you would have to look at the age of the domain, the actual URL compared with your keyword phrase that you searched on, the content on their page, the number of backlinks to their domain and to that particular page (plus a host of other stuff). Somehow you have been beat by one or more of these metrics. You can compensate, however, by boosting metrics you have control over, specifically on-page SEO and backlinks.
