Why My Boss is wasting TIME with this directory.
I've already tried to tell my boss how he is wasting time with this particular directory -
http:// california. uscity. net/
They charge $49 for a link and the juice is spread so far. They even have several subdomains for every state.
His reasoning is that because it shows up on google for the keywords 'california electric companies' it must be a high authority link, I told him no... the competition must just be low for those set of keywords and thats the most relevant site whether it crappy or not that google could find to place in the serps.
I argue that I've added a test site to 100's of relevant directories and did not move at all in the serps from serp position 8 (up or down).
I told him he is just wasting his time and money, it's not doing anything bad for his site - but nothing good either. I told him he would be just as well off getting a link from a blog with low OBL and moderate PR. - at least that would do him some good (i have proven so on test sites)
What do you think and what else can I say to my boss to show him the 'light'?

I'm not so sure I agree. It is a directory relevant to his industry so I think it could possibly be worth it. If it ranks ok for a term relative to his industry he might even get some targeted traffic from it. Have you checked to see if he's ever gotten any traffic from it?
$49 isn't much money in the overall scheme of things so I would look at it a little closer before I just said it wasn't worth it.

No the directory as a whole is not relevant to his industry, they have several hundred categories. Did you check out how competitive those terms are before disagreeing? He hasn't bought the link yet so we can not tell if he has had any traffic from the site. I'm sure it would be a longshot due to how many links are there maybe 1 in 1000 would click his, especially since the search volume is 390 GLOBAL monthly searches.
Yes $49 a year could be better spent I think, even so as the page he would be getting a link from is a pr2 i believe..

Truthfully I did not really check to much into it, just thought I'd raise something to consider before saying don't do it.
I did just take a quick look though and saw there were only 16 listings on the page (http://california.uscity.net/Electric/Companies/) that actually ranks for the term you were suggesting and it is actually a pr0. I also noticed that other deviations of the term you mentioned that page also ranks for so there is potential for more visitors than you may think if you have only checked that one term. I doubt there is much benefit from the link in terms of pr value, but from a standpoint of relevancy it might prove useful.
Also I just noticed that it was $49 a year, thought that was a one time cost when I made my original response, but I will say that $49 a year still seems like a pretty low cost to fuss over, unless of course he has a very tight budget.
However, if he is not an electrical contractor or relevant business in the california area than I don't see the point at all so I guess it is a moot point.

$49 for a year isn't the biggest rip off I have ever seen, there might be some value in it, and for that amount of money it's not one I'd lose sleep over.
There are for sure better value links available if you look though.
