I have gotten that question a lot this year. Very similar curcumstances... Could you give us your URL?

The VIPs here will go crazy at the suggestion that IBLs can harm your ranks, so that's probably not it

KP, just food for thought - is it possible Google instant has a key role in the loss of traffic?

For example, if somebody had a keyword "atlanta shoes" and a person started to type that in, you'd get: atlanta shoes.. stores.. for kids, etc..

Is it possible some of the targeted traffic is getting distracted by the instant results and auto fill?

The reason he is losing traffic (although that's not his complaint) is becasue he lost his ranks.

I'm in the same boat. I seemed to vanish from the SERPS for a few days at a time over the last couple of months. Now the site has been absent from Google for a couple of weeks. All the other search engines are normal.
The sticky on lost rankings gives some useful suggestions as to why, but I'm can't see how these factors relate to my site.

Google did update. The search rankings in Google (for example) are based on the quality of links, unique content and domain authority. We can also consider the fact that our competitor sites has done good SEO that has overtaken our sites.

Good SEO on some competitor sites might drop your website a few places but surely not 100+ places in one night?

Do you think theres been a significant preference in the update towards domain authority/Age? It's the only factor that I can see could drop my 6 month old website this drastically?

If you're truly "nowhere" within the results, you might want to check Google Webmaster Tools for crawl errors.

There have been reports (throughout October) of indexation issues, which Google claims to have "fixed" now.

Did you guys change anything on your sites?

It could be that G have devalued certain types of links, when this kind of thing happens it could be useful to have a thread or poll, so anyone affected can say what their predominant linking structure is, it could well be that a certain pattern could easily be identified.
Comments on this post
seomonkeymanocp agrees: It could be the type of links yes. Are they all the same i.e. have all the "eggs" been put in one
basket?
