Why are the government Sites favoured?

    Guys,
Why and How does Google favour the Government Sites?
How does google know that the site belongs to the government? Is there a special type of signup when the government buys a website?

    spearman,
Not all governemnt sites end in .gov
There are also organizations which google seems to favour for some reason with extension .org and also other sites with regional endings like .ca , .us etc.

have you noticed that if you type in single words like, 'iran', 'iraq', 'north korea', etc. that the cia are top of the list.

strange that, you would of thought it would be a more general site with loads of information about the country?

Hehh they must've been moved to #1 by googlers (dampening factor was probably changed).

I've noticed that government sites have climbed to the top for many search results (I'm talking about products and not services). The results are not very relevant.

I believe the reasons why Google like Government sites is that:
    1. Government site provides useful and specific information.
    2. There many many inbound links.
    3. There are many many visitors.

    4. The government can make google's life a living nightmare if they want to. Google's doing the natural thing, kissing up. :-)

too right Vrian SInth, too right

PCboy, you mentioned many many inbound links.., well why would people link to an inner page of a government site instead of to a propper, dedicated website about the country (examples = north-korea.com, iran.com, etc..

yep, i would definitely say that google has pressure on them to put the government sites higher in the listings.
