Of the top of my head, are you making sure it's targeted to the right people and the message is clear.

I.E. If you had the best content ever on NFL and advertised it as football, I'd say 90% plus of visitors from the UK would leave as they thought it was about soccer!

And vice versa if you have the best content on Soccer and advertised it as football, I'd guess 90% of people in the USA would leave as they thought it was about NFL

I know it's an extreme example but getting the message to the right people in the right way, and in the right places is KEY.

    Cheers Joe

Where do you get this data from?

If you are talking about a specific blog, containing quality content (fresh content is no guarantee of anything, so is immaterial unless you are searching for news) then - as joe says - it's most likely because it's capturing traffic for the wrong search terms (ie: is poorly optimised)!

In general I'd say that blogs do capture a lot of longtail/obscure search queries; probably because - over a period of time (12-18 months) a regularly updated blog will end up with a substantial amount of content, also because the nature of blogging is to write in a conversational way - as opposed to a non-blog website where the copy is more concise...
Many of those longtail/specific terms captured may only be mentioned in passing, thus visitors will find quite quickly that you don't have what they're looking for and will bounce back out!

Fresh, quality content to one is crap to another.

People have different standards and desires.

    Maybe your site is ugly?

    • Perma agrees : I had crap retention on a blog of mine. Re-themed it, now I boast less than 15% bounce. Aesthetics is key

IMO when visitors read particular topic it exit from your blog , visitor land on yourblog page read specific information and exit form that page , there are very few serious visitors wo read the things or content by clicking other links of nevigations, blog is information meterial comment on a post is the intreast of very few visitors.

Its the difference between answering a users question and attracting their attention... the difference between a linkbait blog and a run-of-the-mill blog which answers the same questions everyone else answers.

    YUP!

Invoke a response... spawning comments is an art...

Anyone can have a "read only blog"... but if you think about bounce rate... and the time it takes to register, login, and comment... it cures all bounce issues.

The more generic your site, the higher the bounce rate, and the more specific your site is, the lower the bounce rate. The same goes for keyword searches for your site, for example I type in "dvd" because I want to watch a dvd, and the response will be overwhelming with a million dvds, and I won't know what to choose from, so I'll likely bounce. But a more specific search "the matrix dvd", oooh yeah I'll buy that! Sorry I hope this isn't overstating the obvious, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. There are lots of different factors that go in the mix regarding bounce, as you have read.
