Multiple possible reasons and any post here is a guess.

Here is a likely reason.... you have content on your site that is very similar from page to page or very similar to another site.

Wow..., could you (EGOL or someone else) tell us more about it? How can similar content cause drop and comeback?

I experience something similar:
Two pages (homepage vs. inner page) are optimized for the same keyword. Once Google lists the homepage in SERPs, and it ranks well. The other time google lists the inner page and it drops in SERPs.

IMO, it is not about content similarity, but more about backlinks. It seems google cannot decide which one to list.

Google does not like to have lots of copies of the same information in its index. When google finds duplicate content on many pages only some of those pages will be displayed in the search results. The rest will be filtered. If you have many pages on the same site that are nearly duplicate, only changing perhaps a city or a state from one page to the next, then google will likely filter most of your pages from the search results. The one or two that will be displayed will likely be your more powerful ones.

If there are multiple sites with the same information, google might show a few of them but filter the rest. The ones that are displayed are the ones with the most authority for the query.

Sure, but why would it cause those jumps up and down in SERPs?

My guess is that you are teetering on the edge of a filter with multiple other sites... sometimes you are in, sometimes they are in.

The remedy is to either become the dominant site with that content, or reauthor your content so that your content is not similar to theirs.

If the problem is on your own site then you need to reauthor the pages with similar content so that they are no longer similar.
