Why#3 in Yahoo and obscure in Google?

Why for a search term would I be #3 in Yahoo, but I can't even find myself in Google? Why are the sites so different? I do find that Yahoo seems to really WEED out information, but I really don't understand the difference.

Do you mean Google is FASTER than Yahoo? My site just DROPPED from the rankings around the week of the 4th from Google, but actually moved UP in Yahoo.. go figure.

See yahoo and google are following two different algorithms.
Yahoo mainly prefer onpage factors, where Google likes off page optimization.May be the on page optimization of your site is good, but lack in off page optimization.
I would suggest you,to increase the back link power of your site.
For Google ranking it is very very useful.

Had Google and Yahoo not been different, do you think one would ever exist.

They are different, coz their algorithms are different, their hierarchy of preferences are different and their owners as well

Seriously, being on Yahoo doesn't in any way mean that you're also eligible for a somewhat closer-to-Yahoo rank in Google.

Yahoo is more about on page optimization and Google is more about off-page optimization (links; user behavior etc)

Aim for Google, it's the hardest to rank - but once you are through, you'll feel it's really worth it

How to top in Google ??? - Stick around and go through the threads

    Good luck mate

As others have suggested their algorithms are very different. Start with this forum's tips for Newbies in my signature to learn how Google works. Read up and come back and ask questions. Welcome and good luck.

I was on the FIRST page for at least 3 months and it TOOK me three months to get there for certain keywords and SUDDENLY around the 4th of July I disappeared??? I only added one line of text to my homepage that linked to another page in my site. I can't imagine that did it but maybe. STrangely when this happened I jumped from #5 to #3 for the same search term in Yahoo. Anyways, I'm damned if I do..damned if I don't.

Slurp still does crawl more pages more frequently than the others.

I have long believed that the quality of the search algorithm is a lot more important for search results than the frequency or depth of crawling. I have a feeling that Google has better results algs than the others and that's why people use it more.

I also notice in my logs, I get more search visitors from Google than all the other combined times three.

Edited: I just now was reading the very help SEO faq. It said that the difference between the Yahoo alg and the Google alg is that Yahoo puts more weight on in-page stuff (text in H1s, etc) whereas Goog puts more weight on IBLs and linking. Interesting, and it looks to me like Google's system gives Google users better results than Yahoo's system, which is why there's so much more Google search actvity than Yahoo.

SEO_am: "Welcome to SEO Chat. Hope to see more from you."

Thank you! I love this stuff. I have rambling thoughts and questions on this stuff all the time. I also blog about it, from the "front lines", and when I have gotten to be an established member here I'll post a link to it (google for Cazoodle and see link #10 for my blog). SEO is not my business; it's what I do for marketing for my real business, which is web application development. I have advised customers "hey if you would just get rid of that frameset and put in some blogs with static URLs you wouldn't have to spend as much on Adwords", but that's the limit of my pro SEO work.
