    where to start?

I currently own a fairly succesful sports discussion forum. I havent done any SEO on it, and am lost as to where to start.

I am going to install a URL cleaner mod on Tuesday, and this will help the pages get indexed properly.

I have set the name of the site as my targeted keyword phrase "Sports gambling forums"

where do i go from here? I am working on backlinks, but other than that, what do the pros on here recommend?

Follow this link, visit the first two sticky threads: http://forums.seochat.com/f28/s That should give you enough to read and digest for a couple days, if not weeks.

I'm new to SEO, like you, and have found this site invaluable in helping me gain traffic. But I think that asking targeted questions will probably get you better results than an umbrella question like "How do I SEO?" At least that's been my experience.

Good luck in your quest for SEO!

I will open up the thread in the site review forum, this was probably the wrong section.

    Sorry mods

The best place to start is by analyzing your competition. Find out more about the sites that are already at the top of the SERPS for your keyword. How many backlinks do they have, what is the PR, maybe get a software tool that enables you to do a deep analysis of the competition. SEO Elite looks like a good tool though I've not used it yet. You need to have a good understanding of what you're up against before you start you SEO work.

Well - the url cleaner was a good move I bet

Also take a look at the mod-rewrite for forums tips here:

Wit, that's a darn fine link. I have a copy of vB 3.0.7 sitting around waiting for me to launch another forum - I believe I'll be using that hack. Fantastic stuff! Wish I could pass some rep along to you....

Have you checked to see if they are indexed already? If you go changing your URLs when they are already indexed you can cause the SEs to choke; they will have to go back and find the new links to reindex all your new pages (as if they are new)

Will the Url Cleaner make redirects for you? I've heard of mod_rewrite but I haven't heard of any tools that do all the work for you so please excuse my ignorance on that aspect. If there is a tool for your bulletin board that handles the whole conversion process and writes all the permanent redirects to the new URLs that would be a pretty sweet thing.

Yup, I noticed the Invision... Sorry, but I haven't got any tricks in my bookmarks collection for that Some SEO gurus specialise in doing mod-rewrites though...

Anyway, a site search on Google:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Asportspunters.com

...will show which pages are indexed already (and how).

thanks, looks like they have over 1000 pages indexed. But not much of it is any use to be honest.

I will be creating a main page and filling it with tons of daily content & keywords, so that should help as well.

Any way to find which pages have been indexed in the past 7 days?

Everything indexed up to two days ago should show up on that search. For fun - you can also try the same command on search.msn.com:

Why rush to install the URL cleaner if you currently have 1000 pages indexed? The whole point of installing the cleaner was to help the SEs - particularly Google I assume - index your pages properly. Google is obviously indexing your pages if you got 1k pages in there, right?

Another week of research to see if you can figure out a way to [R=301] redirect your ugly query strings to the sexy urls won't hurt you will it? Invision is a widely used board, it is certainly conceivable someone has already written a way to spin out your database into the new urls with the mod you want to install. I did it recently for a very large database driven site of mine that I moved to a new domain so I know it's not too hard to do.

Furthermore, if you don't want to redirect each page you could opt to 301 a group of your most important pages and give Google a bit of a head start when it has to go looking for all your new pages.
