Find keyword first to search site. Then study the content of the site.. third step write simple short emails requesting linkexchange. Reply to the answers you get accordingly.

What is SEO
SEO is the science/art of engineering or re-engineering a page or site so that it leverages aspects of a Search Engines ranking algorithm so as to appear as high in Search Results pages as possible - position 1 for the defined search is usually the objective.

A Search Engine Ranking Algorithm probably contains over 100 (probably double this) factors it users to put the Search Engine Rseults page into an order presented to the Search Engine User.

SEO is the knowledge of what these factors are and how to leverage them.

A Search Engine User is a prime target for conversion as they are in 'Go' mode, that is they are making a statement of intent - thus conversion rates can be incredibly high against other more recognised advertising methods.

To get started on SEO you could catch up with Jill Whalens articles but you may start to wander beyond these as your knowledge grows.
