1. Use CSS – The pages of the websites should ideally be made through CSS as such pages tend to be lighter and can be easily crawled and indexed by the search engines. The pages should not have any broken links or erroneous codes as they make them unfavorable to the search engines. The pages should be checked with online HTML checkers and page validators to ensure that they are free from errors or designing bugs.
2. W3C Validation – Validation of the website through the W3C validator at http://validator.w3.org/ will ensure that the page codes and elements are made according to the web standards and free from errors. This will ensure smoother and deeper crawling of the website pages by the search engine spiders.
3. Website Navigation – While creating the internal navigation structure of the websites, the following should be kept in mind.
- HTML Links – The links to the internal pages of the site should be made in the form of simple HTML Links. While flashy GIF, JPEG or Flash buttons can be visually appealing, but it makes crawling of the pages by the search engine spiders harder. Hence HTML links are the best way to create the internal navigation structure of the websites.
- Navigation Menu – The homepage of the websites should have a navigation menu bar placed at prominent locations, preferable above the fold near the top of the page, the left column and also at the footer. Links to main sections of the site should be placed at the top and the footer of the pages, while links to internal sections should be placed at the left navigation menu.
- Breadcrumb Navigation - If there are pages that are more than 2 levels deep from the homepage, then it is a good practice to use breadcrumb navigation on the pages. Breadcrumb navigation is good for both SEO and the usability of the site. Text based breadcrumb navigation will show the current location of a page within the site hierarchy and at the same time providing shortcut links to jump to previous pages without the need of pressing the “back” button on the browser. Breadcrumb navigation also helps the search engine spiders to deep crawl and index pages that are multiple levels deep, mainly the sub-category pages.
Example: A product page for a table lamp may have the breadcrumb navigation of “Home > Home Furnishings > Lighting > Table Lamps.
4. HTML Sitemap – The website should have an HTML sitemap which links to each and every page of the website. This is a very useful navigation tool for both the visitors as well as for the search engine spiders.

Before starting a site, it is very important for a web master to know the market properly. You have to do a sound research work. Three most important things are Competition, Content Resource and Traffic.
Competition:
When ever you are starting a website, first thing that will come to your mind is the theme of the site. While deciding the theme, you have to acquire knowledge about the competition. Competition on that theme will help you to make a plan for your marketing. If you are working on a high competitive theme, then your marketing plan must be excellent.
Content Resource:
“CONTENT IS THE KING”. Yes, success of your site depends a lot on the content of your site. Before starting your website, you have to be sure about your content. From where you are going to get the content, very important thing that you have to decide. For that, you can do a research on the content of the other popular sites on that theme.
Traffic:
This is the thing for which each and every person on the internet is working. When you are deciding the theme you must chose a topic for which visitors will come to your site. Like I am working on this blog, coz now days Search Engine is a very important and interesting aspect of the whole internet. That’s why I know visitors will come to my blog. You have to decide what kind (age group, sex etc) of visitors you want, from where (country, religion etc) you want the visitors etc.

Title Tag is the first impression of your page to the Search Engine as well as the Visitors, so it should be meaningful. Don’t make it spammy and meaning less.
Write the title and heading tags in such a way, so that it can help search engines and visitors identify the main subject of the page.

Page loading time can be high and flash files are obstruction for search engine bots.

hi Raj,
1) Onpage optimization needs keywords research....among those keywords need to create relevant Title, description and keywords tag...place it before body tag n under Head tag...
2) Secondly, Needs content on your website...it reuires to be optimized, so u can insert keywords to the content . but keyword density should be 4 to 5 % per page.
3) Apply 301 redirect
4) Custom 404 error page.
5) Create a sitemap.xml and submit to webmaster tools.
6) Image optimization - provide title tags to the images

Is it a good idea to have both HTML and XML sitemap for a site?? HTML will help the visitors and XML will help the search engines.

1.First of all finalize your keywords.
there are two kind of keywords:
1. Low hanging keywords
2. Branding Keywords
Low hanging keywords basically known as the sales keywords and initially we should only go for these kind of keywords later on we gradually move to branding key words so choose your keywords accordingly.
2.Now go for title and meta tag. Always review your competitor's site that how they have put their keywords in title and meta tag which gives a brief idea of what exactly people are targeting.
3.Put some quality content (keyword rich) on your pages but remember your content should be informative, interactive and unique. while writing the content do keep few points in mind like a. keyword proximity
b. keyword density and
c. keyword prominence
4.If your site has images don't forget to put appropriate alt tag.
5.Internal linking of pages is must.It helps in fast crawling.
6.Create xml sitemap for Google and Msn and urllist file for Yahoo! and submit it to the webmaster tool.
These are the few techniques for on page optimization. please PM me if need further assistance.........
