to add on to Fathom's comment about meta keywords - I personally only use them as a reminder to which keywords i'm optimizing for each page.

    Hi
i think that the maximum length for title, keyword and description meta tag for google ranking should be

    title---About 60 characters.

keyword---5 to 10 words should be enough.

    description---150 to 200 characters

I agree with Fathom. Keywords tag is NOT used in ranking by Google. See their latest video about it on webmaster central blog.

    The Role of Meta Tags

Only the title tag plays a direct role in ranking. Its very difficult to rank highly for a keyword without using that keyword in your title tag - although not impossible. My own preferred limit is 64 characters including spaces. This dates back to RFC1866. But generally less is more. And remember there's a physical limit in terms of what the SERPs will display.

Which brings me onto the description tag. Use it intelligently. It doesn't appear to have any direct bearing on Google. But a good description will appear in the SERPs and can help sell your website.

As mentioned above the keywords tag should be used solely as a way of maintaining site discipline.

    YES ABSOLUTELY!

Google recently (Jan 09 I believe) updated their title element to be 69 characters although if you go beyond that even to 70... it will cut you off at around 58 (worth remembering).

I'm a person that doesn't just believe what people say about this tag because it's nearly impossible to prove any CTR value is relevant to any specific element or tag.

That said... in October I will be starting a 3 separate test groups in 3 different marketings using identical websites and identical linkage to each with the onlt difference between them is:

    1. meta description in 3 domains
    2. snippets only in 3 domains and
    3. trying an alternative with noscript instead of meta description on 3 domains.

...and comparing ranked positions in real-time against Meta vs. Snippet Vs. Noscript and see if there is any difference.

    Sometimes less is more.

I personally keep the title and description focused around the keywords. If you use up all of the characters you are allowed, you could potentially be harming your site as Google may have a harder time figuring out what keywords you are targetting.

    How accurate?

Just review results... pick 10 phrases and look for the longest titles and count... and monitor the ones that end in ...

Anybody knows a tool that automatically checks these values on all pages of a website ?

Should it not exist, then this is a decent tip for a linkbait. I will be fine with a linkback to my site from this tool for sharing this idea ;)
