What is the use of the | in meta descriptions
First of all, I don't even know what the name of the | symbol is. Second, I can't seem to find it anywhere on my keyboard. Third, it appears in 5 of the top 10 urls (meta title) for my main keyword. Can anyone shed any light on it's name and use in seo?

First off, it is called a vertical bar.
Second, it is basically just used as a spacer, most commonly used in titles. Helps break things up visually, but basically is just a spacer.

I always get suspicious when a group of webmasters start dominating the rankings and is doing something I'm not. Any other seo comments on the use of the vertical bar|pipeline?

I'm sure if I thought about it long enough I could come up with some elaborate purpose for it but it would still lead to having ZERO impact on SEO efforts. It has the same effect as a comma (,), dash (-), asterisk (*), and the list goes on. It tends to look a little more aesthetically appealing in my opinion.
Move on and don't sweat the small, meaningless stuff. If you think there is some underlying purpose, add them to your site and test it. But I will add and try to save you time, you've heard it from three separate people that it has no purpose and no SEO benefit.
