We should be adding Gary Illyes and Danny Sullivan to the list of G spokespeople

Gary Illyes seems to be G's main presenter at SEO conferences at present. The following link is to a video of a Q & A session at the UK's biggest SEO conference:

Gary Illyes - Brighton SEO Sept '17

    Video Discussion Topics:

    • The "Fred" update
    • Accuracy of SEO tool change "weather reports"
    • RankBrain & engagement signals like CTR
    • Links - Penguin,
    • Use of Disavow
    • Link authority & domain authority - "we don't have them"
    • G. still uses manual penalties for link manipulation
    • Link audits - any value in monthly audits?
    • Mobile first index - when's it coming?
    • We want to avoid fixed ranking "boosts" like https
    • Http -> https site switches

He said "we don't have domain authority", so I'm thinking there still is "link authority" value.

    Hi Tritrain,
Google call its link valuing process, "Page Rank".

"Link authority" is a term created by an SEO tool developer. They try to emulate G's Page Rank but it seems to me they are getting less accurate. These days, the SEO tools don't even know what links and values G uses for specific search queries.

    Hi Ruthlessfocus,
In case you missed it, here is the basic problem for all the SEO tools that try to report/analyse external links...

Sep 2017: Google: We Ignore Tons Of Links But Which Links Is Almost Impossible To Figure Out

"... it is "close to impossible for you to check which links are actually deemed critical." So why bother trying to figure out which links are important and which links are not if there is no way for you to do so?"

"Gary then added that Google "ignores tons of links" and that even if you collect data from Google Search Console and third-party tools " that you won't know which ones are absolutely critical."'

    G. spokespeople have said that it selects external links based on their relevance to the search query. So, we don't know what links G recognises to begin with and we don't know which ones G uses for PageRank calculations for a specific search query.

How quickly will rankings change post major site changes?

This ranking change time-frame topic crops up in many posts. Things seem to have changed frequently from what used to be called the "sandbox".

This is the most recent update from Google's John Mueller...

21 Mar 2018: Google: Can Take 6+ Months to See Rankings Improve from Quality Improvements

"So usually these types of changes take time, itís something where the algorithm has to kind of re-evaluate your whole website overall and a lot of low quality pages, they can play a role here. But sometimes thereís just so many other factors that come into play and thatís something that doesnít just jump back up."

PS to Sysop: Can this thread title be updated to reflect comments by all current Google spokespeople? Matt Cutts has left Google. Main spokespeople now include, Gary Illyes, Danny Sullivan, Paul Haahr and more.
