What is the best website structure out of these 2 ideas...

    Hi guys

I am redoing my website and want it structured properly. What is best out of these 2 examples:

    widgets.com
    widgets.com/blue-widgets/
    widgets.com/blue-widgets/where-to-buy.php
    widgets.com/blue-widgets/types.php
    widgets.com/blue-widgets/photos.php

    OR

    widgets.com
    widgets.com/blue-widgets.php
    widgets.com/blue-widgets/where-to-buy.php
    widgets.com/blue-widgets/types.php
    widgets.com/blue-widgets/photos.php

Should the main Blue Widgets page be a directory, or should it be a static page at the root level? All the sub pages will be linking back to the main Blue Widgets section...

It wouldn't be a directory, it would be a file (index.php or similar) just like all the rest.

I don't believe it would make any difference as far as SEO is concerned, but it would be much harder for you to logistically keep track of so many index.php's.

Agreed it would be a real file, as in index.php - but it would be a layer down from the root that's the issue I'm unsure of.

Should your guides main page be in the same directory as the sub pages or one level up?

It makes next to no difference. The cleaner the URL the better for user perception and CTR but as far as SEO is concerned, there is not a strong argument either way.

Agreed, furthermore to emphasize the cleaner url, not sure if you were just using it as an example but I would just say
    widgets.com/blue/
    rather than
    widgets.com/blue-widgets/
