What are the best internal linking practices

We have a news section on our site and we link in to result pages on our site.

Lets say we are selling widgets.. content as follows

Microsoft have announced today that they will be buying widgets in London in order to gain a higher presence etc..

We have alot of similar pages and I worry that the internal linking is very keyword specific and that we may have been penalised for it.
Would we be better to write..

Microsoft have announced today that they will be buying widgets in London in order to gain a higher presence etc..

So the internal link has the keywords but is less targeted in terms of the text in the link. ? .. the bold is the link..

    Well sure!

But first, the URLs themselves are not any great value (which suggests Microsoft hasn't been well informed, even about Bing.com).

The keywords in the link anchor is categorically what will improve exposure and obviously if you are doing that via internal links these would be considered natural links (unlike external links anchored the same way are unnatural).

But you don't need to change all the link anchors in your domain to experience the value... I generally do this via blog pages only linking to the most appropriate commercial page as that is the best place to get links (editorial links are better reasons to get a link and you don't need to keyword them so you can avoid PENGUIN and Manual Reviews and then in the posted information link appropriately so a editorial patron can easily become a customer/buyer.

IMO, as long as the target page is relevant to the anchor text, you're free to use whatever terms you want for any given internal link, provided it makes sense to a user. So I don't think at the level of any given individual link that you need to expand the anchor text to make it "seem" more natural.

However, as a whole, I would be at least a little cautious with how this strategy is practiced at scale, across the entire site. A few caveats here:

    1) Try to make sure News/Blogs content has just 1-3 internal links per post and vary that number from time to time. Don't go crazy and place 7 internal links on every blog post or news article. And again, the target pages should be relevant to the keywords used as anchor text.

    2) Try to vary which keywords and their variations are being used to point to a single page, so that any given URL has multiple anchor texts associated with it and not just the same one over and over. This will help mitigate any risk posed by overuse of any particular anchor text as well as "cast a wider net" for keyword variations associated with the pages. I've seen clients successfully rank for several mid to long tail keywords without a single external backlink containing those anchor texts - it was mainly from well placed internal links.

    3) Finally, there isn't as much added value as you'd think to internal links if the section/pages of the site with the internal links don't have any link equity of their own to flow to the commercial pages. So the best places to put an internal link with commercial anchor text are going to be the few News/Blog content assets that have genuine backlinks pointing to them. For most sites, that's a fairly small % of their total blog/news posts. Much of the effort in placing internal links on all the other content that no one reads or no one links to isn't justified ROI-wise in the end. So it's ok to be really picky too about when, where and how you add internal links to that section of your site.

    Hope that helps!

Not really a concern... take a look at the millions of pages in Wikipedia that link internally to whatever when the term appears on the page whatever that term is...

Look at the SEO page... Search engine optimization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia in just the first paragraph there are 10 keyword oriented links.

Clearly you should write naturally and not focus on keyword references as the reason to write.
