the answer to this is simple..you can not be penalized in any way for having a non-related backlink....worst case scenario is google simply will not count that backlink in your favor in any form. If this were the case, people would be linking up their competitors to cause them harm, Google is wise to this. So you have nothing to worry about.

As noted, links pointing to your site (as google says "there is almost nothing") traditionally have been felt to do no harm to a sites rankings.

Linking out to non-related sites can impact your site negatively.

Yahoo.com, in their almighty grace, will ban sites for excessive irrelevant link exchanges. They, as a blessing to web site owners, will not tell you why.

To "unban" your website, you must delete entirely your links section. This is a negative for sure. However, since this is a google thread we're talking about, links to "Bad Neighbors' will adversely affect your rankings. Risk of an outbound link. They require you monitor and baby site them regularly. BIG pain in the butt.

The bottom line, link out to only relevant sites and get links in from relevant sites.

Relevant links in will help your rankings with Google, Yahoo and MSN. Recip links require management and maintenance.

Be prepared to do this or you can unexpectedly experience major negative shifts in rankings as a result of someone elses actions. Always a bad thing ;)

No one way inbound link can hurt you, While considering recips, its recommeneded to make sure as to what you are linking to.

Coz its the Outbound links from your site that will make the difference and not the inbound links links.

Doing LINK EXCHANGE with irrelevant site is dangerous.
If you get one way links then it is not harmful, but in LINK EXCHANGE you have to link back them and that is harmful.

I never link to irrelevant sites - not even news sites that mention my site somewhere in an article - without a rel="nofollow". I would only do a link exchange with relevant sites to gain trust instead of losing it!

I donot beleive that you can 'gain trust' internally. I beleive trust rank is purely a factor of inward LJ. What I believe is that the sites you choose to link to is a factor that google uses in helping to determine relevance. If you link to themed sites you are making your site more themed relevant. This is why it can help your SERPs. If you link out to to many non themed sites you possibly confuse google as to what you see your site as relevant to. Thus this is why it can hurt your SERPs. You reduce you relevance to a search query. SERPs are determined after a query is entered by some combination of 'trust and relevance'. still the net effect is the same it can hurt your SERPs but I think it is a relevance issue not a trust one.

Not totally accurate. MSN is even known to ban sites based on irrelevant link exchanges and google is cracking down on them.
Irrelevant link exchanges can get you in trouble.

The traffic you would get from a non-relevant site is worthless and Google would not value it also.

You cannot get harmed by a spammy web site linking to you UNLESS you link back.

Just keep everything relevant and Mr Google and his cronies will be happy

i think as long as you dont link out to them it should not matter.
if you must link out to them use rel="nofollow"
