    Using subdomain to host website

Hi, so I have a website which receives 90% of its traffic from Google searches for "xxx yyyy zzzzzzz"

    It is presently hosted at

    www.xxx-yyyy-zzzzzzz.com

and I am considering moving it to

    xxx.yyyyzzzzzzz.com

in an effort to get its ranking improved from its present average position of 3.

(xxxyyyyzzzzzz.com is not available at a reasonable price)

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Thanks

I can't see that helping in any way. So your just looking to eliminate the hyphens?

Why would you expect that to help, particularly in Google? Google no longer gives preference to EMDs.

    Thanks for the reply.

If starting again I would definitely choose a non-hyphenated domain name now as I think it looks more authoritive in Google search.

So I was wondering if moving part of my keyword phrase into the subdomain would have a negative effect as most of my traffic comes from a 3-word search term.

eg: A google search for 'red letter day'

    red-letter-day.com versus red.letterday.com

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know about EMDs and I found it very useful.

It seems the domain name is not really important in ranking now so I may ditch the nasty hyphens.

Now I just have to worry about losing juice from my backlinks.

I think you need to study SEO before making any other changes. What seems reasonable, and likely, really doesn't equate to actually understanding SEO. I don't have the time to tell you about the dangers you are about to face, but simply changing domains without following certain protocols will be like starting from scratch with a new website.

    Don't do it!

If you are just concerned with branding - register the URL and 301 redirect it to your original domain. Do not move your content from the domain you have established, it will be bad news for you and will take a lot to recover from.
