Interesting read that really puts the debate to rest

I had long since believed that user behavior had to be a fact - even when there was feverish debate about it. For the simple reason that it is obvious and logical.
I am interested on the dwell time metric though - is it really true "dwell time" with no mouse inputs or does it use chrome or other browser events and user inputs to know that the user is really viewing the page.
The scientist in me wants to do an experiment. This could probably easily be done on a low ranking term - where you make a page with a bunch of events that happen when you scroll and move the mouse - do two batch of tests - 1) Just dwell on one page and 2) move all over the page and scroll, etc on another very similar page - I bet the page with more "activity" would be the one that wins.

I have it on good authority tha CTR does not impact rankings - simply because it'd be too easy to manipulate.

Several years ago I conducted a study on CTR and found that it did have a small impact.
I agree though that CTR is quite easy to manipulate. I am sure the big G and others have got very good at understanding user behavior characteristics and look at what typical user behaviors would be and basing decisions made on the user of an amalgamation of metrics rather than just on CTR alone. Thats why I was thinking that just dwell time alone might not have such a strong impact as an "active browsing session".

I agree that it is easy to manipulate, look at the test Fishkin did in the article I referenced.

Google's goal is to show the most relevant pages and sites. Google analyzes sites automatically with the help of Googlebot. Googlebot conducts analysis for certain factors. The behavior of users on the page indicates that the page is liked by the users or not. So this is one of the important factors in ranking.
