    Updated website...AHH!! Bad Links Everywhere!

Quick question....what is some advice on getting rid of all these old URLs in Google?

I used to use a shopping cart that spit out URLs like this:
    www.johndanielfootwear.com/cgi-bin/ shop.pl/SID=1105772053.83/page=johndanielcas.htm

and now I have almost a hundred links out there in google that pull up NOTHING. I might as well hit potential customers over the head with a 2x4.

What is the best way to remedy the problem? I'd like to keep the rankings for this client, whatever ranking I had, and just let Google phase out these URLs but I can't get my host to cooperate. The alternative is getting these junk URLs out of Google.

    Recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Since you don't know the url's best pratice would be set up a customized 404 page were the customer can get to the site easy if they happen to come into this page and Google will eventually delete them

I ran into a similar situation and used a custom 404. From there you can offer hyperlinks to anywhere in your site. With your design of your 404 the customer need not be aware of the glitch. You can lead in: "Sorry, but the page you are attempting to access has been modified. Please click below to select the section..... "

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I have limited access to be able to do a custom 404. This is a client I converted over to Citymax so they can maintain the site themselves.

I contacted Citymax but they are playing dumb.

Get this, you type in this bad URL you get a good, custom 404 error:

    http://www.johndanielfootwear.com/nopage.html

    You type in this one:

    http://www.johndanielfootwear.com/nopage.htm

And you get this lame generic error message that leaves users at a dead end. Look closely, the only thing that is different is .htm and .html.

The only response I get is "We're having our programmers look at it." I'm trying to get some phone numbers to speak to a live person, but it's a fortress there.

Anyway, any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

    * How can I remove content from Google's index?
    * Why is the automatic URL removal system in the wrong language?
    * If I remove my site using the public removal tool, how long will it be excluded?
    * How do I remove a dead link from the search results?
