Unofficial Site Ranking Higher Than Official Site - Any Ideas?

    Hi All

I wonder if anyone can help.

I've got a friend who works for the new Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. The official site is registering at number 2 in Google for 'aylesbury waterside theatre'.

However, some little tinker has registered another site and this is registering higher for the search term 'aylesbury waterside theatre'. It is a good looking site, but the owner won't put a link to or sell tickets for the official site.

Is it possible to 'report' them to Google, or is just a case of doing a better SEO job?

Any help on how to tackle this would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Is the "official" site the .co.uk? (makes sense that it would be)

If so, then you're at #1 from what I see.

Unfortunately it's not, it is the ambasadorticketscom (I couldn't type in the full URL.)

Any ideas on how to get this above .co.uk?

I see www.aylesburywatersidetheatre.co.uk #1 from Canada, USA, and UK

make sure you are not logged in to your google account when you search.

Sorry, I'm confusing matters here. Apologies

The ambassadortheatres com URL is the official site.

Aylesburywatersidetheatre is not. Someone has bought the domain and done a good job of making it look professionial.

However, you can't buy tickets on here and it's not actually the official site!

Call me stupid but if you can't buy tickets... what do you think ticket shoppers will do?

    Hah hopefully not.

I think the unofficial site is a hotel owner in Aylesbury who wants to drive traffic to his hotel site by piggy backing on traffic for the theatre.

To be honest the URLs should have been bought by the Theatre to prevent this happening.

Is there any other tips on how to usurp them from number 1?

Links anchored with the phrase and variation of the phrase.

Buy the domain from them. Will fix this and other problems. If you can get it for a couple thousand will be a good move.

Yeah, I wondered if that was the purpose of the domain being bought at all.

It seems like an SEO owns the site (whois info), what other reasons could they have bought it and be developing it?

Advertising revenue can't be great, can it?

The fact that it will be 'fraudulent link bait' (where people will link to it thinking it is the 'real thing' - for example he says, "It is expected that we [the theatre - I assume] will have over 300,000 visitors every year.") They then will have the 'authority' built up to link out to their SEO customers?

Does this whole thing not fall under something like:

These quality guidelines cover the most common forms of deceptive or manipulative behavior, but Google may respond negatively to other misleading practices not listed here (e.g. tricking users by registering misspellings of well-known websites).
I'm 'well up for playing the system/Google' but this seems a little bit more like deceiving the end user - which I'm not at all up for.

Contact the guys who link to them and tell them that they are not linking to the authentic site & get them to change it - that would probably be the easiest solution. I see that even some of the 'tours' (like Jimmy Carr) are linking to them!!!

I'm not sure how it is in the UK but here in the US, if you can't come to terms and you own the trademark you can pursue them in Court for Trademark infringement since they are riding on the trademark to gain traffic.

You also might be able to shut the site down at their host. I've done this with Copyright violations.
