Two H1 tags - does this impact SEO ranking?

    Hi All,

I have spotted two H1 tags on the website. Although the fix is very simple - change the other H1 tag
to either H2 or H3, etc. - I have actually removed one H1 (which was the title of the site) and left the other one
which is the title of the home page. Both titles are in H1 by default. The funny part is that audit report still counts
this as two existing tags - hence poor page score and critical errors. I ran the check through sitechecker.pro

Are H1 tags important for SEO ranking? Do I need to keep only one H1?

    Many thanks,
    S

Looks like you over use your H tags, 16 H2 tags, really.

You can use them all, or none at all. You can use as many as you want. You do not need to use all six HTML elements to structure your pages. Google ESPECIALLY is used to broken HTML on the web.

Firstly, For good SEO headings should follow the proper hierarchy.

For example: h1 should be followed by h2 as a child element. You cannot keep h3 as a parent element and h2 as a child of h3. That will harm your SEO.

    Secondly, there should be only

    1. One h1 tag in a page,
    2. 3 or 4 or 5 h2 tags

You can use other headings tags according to your requirement.

Make sure you all the rules for good SEO.

There are two theories concerning this, the older of the two recommends a single H1. The new based on html 5 allows for as many H1 tags as needed to fulfill the requirements of the page based on the number of "Section Elements".

    Watch this vid, most enlightening.

Google uses h1 tags as titles, to understand what the content is about. When you have more than one h1 tags with different keywords, it might complicate things and make it difficult for the search engine to distinguish the content and hence problems with SEO can occur. We would advise sticking with one h1 per page if possible.

Thanks for this - it does make sense now. But I am still wondering as to why the audit tool still sees both H1 tags (site title and page title) on the website though site title is not filled/removed. I presume that is due to default settings of the WP them but is there any manual workaround to fix this?

Yes, it is due to the setting as programmed by your WP theme.

Yes there is a workaround. It's pretty much a standard operating procedure.

The way you modify this behavior is you install your WP theme, then you create a "Child Theme" for the theme you have chosen. Now you modify the theme files so your child theme handles this. The reason you create the child theme is when your theme updates, and or when WP updates you don't lose your modifications.

As a general rule, when I install a WP site and install the theme, I immediately create a child theme and use that. I do this even if I don't plan to make any changes to the theme in the beginning. Why ? Because you never know when you may have to make a change to accommodate a client request or to fix a bug in the theme. Bugs do happen every now and then.
