The importance of using landmarks for Googe Map iPhone App
Yesterday my girlfriends car broke down. She got on her iPhone and looked up "Car repair near TJC" on Google Maps (TJC is our community college) to get a quote, and no results came up, though we know there are 2 repair shops directly across the street from the college.
There are some people that just aren't very good with street names. In my opinion, If you exclude landmarks in the copy, you're ruling out those people for a search. The Google Maps app on the iPhone automatically localizes the search, so phrases like "Chinese restaurant near the mall" will automatically be placed in reference to your city. I believe phrases such as "hair salon by walmart" are much more intuitive for the average to the below average search engine user.
