Subpage higher in SERP than index page?

Hello guys. I started my website and it is online for about 40 days. When I check my position in the Google serp, I get that mydomain.com/page/2/ is at position 114, and my index page is 805! Most of my backlinks point to my index page, how come /page/2/ got a better position, or got even any position in Google serp?

Does your query match the domain?

Said page is more relevant to the particular search term in question. You need to change your URL settings in WP if those are your literal URL's.

That could be...WP??? What makes you think it's a word press site?
I wouldn't be changing any url settings until I knew what the problem is.

WP, yes - WordPress. The CMS that defaults pages in a similar fashion. Although I don't have 15 years experience, my little experience that I do have did provide me with that lesson.

Oh, you're right Tom. Having /page/1/ is a proper title form both for Search Engines and users.

My apologies. Allow me to stay in my lane.

Yes, it is a wordpress site. How can it be more relevant to the keyword if both pages are the same, just the products are different? Well, I got about 10 backlinks in this period.

joshz...Is WP the only site builder that creates page names that way?

It might sound silly, but what URL settings do I have to change? In the settings tab, the default URL is mydomain.com

I believe Josh was referring to the permalink settings.

If so then you need to go to your WP dashboard then select:

    Settings > Permalinks

In there select 'post name' or a 'custom structure' as the common structure. That gives a more "seo/user friendly" url.

I think this is what he is trying to tell you to do anyway.

Thanks for your reply. I have done all of those things before even creating content on my website. I set meta tags, title, h1, etc. Everything for a seo friendly environment, but this is bothering me cause I don't like the /page/2/ appearing in the serps and I got no clue how it got a much much better position than my index page.

Oh, would you look at that. Paying attention to detail.. What an odd concept. No. WP is not the only "site builder", or Content Management System that uses horrible default URL's. Each have a different structure and syntax. However; some are more obvious that others. WordPress does a lot better job than say, Joomla with default URL's - but both, if not all CMS's have default settings to modify and adjust how a URL is displayed and shown. But then again, I don't have 15 years experience...

    You're welcome.

You can follow this super easy guide that will walk you through how to change your URLs. It's super simple.

    Follow this easy guide

If you have ALREADY done this change, then go back to each page and modify the name under the actual title. You will see this:

See, under the title (The big number 1) it has the highlighted URL with the edit? That's your key.

I have done everything you said, thank you. Now I can't do much but wait and slowly build links hoping that it will be ok this time.
