I dont think google discriminates between .org and .com domains.
I think it all depends on the quality of the website and authority of the backlinks. Currently I am working on a .org domain and I am doing pretty well I think. |

That is correct. The only reason why people feel that edu, org TLD domains are considered more powerful is because generally they offer more of an editorial role and non profit so people do not fear linking to them. The resources they have a of high value and they gain the best backlinks. It is perfectly possible for a .com to do the same. It all depends on the content and the links.

I wouldn't go with a .org for commercial purposes.
I do own a .org directory though. But it has never been meant to be a for-profit site. |

hyphens are ok with Google and serp's as well. I am saying this from my personal experience with my sites. and yes backlinks from .org, .edu and .gov will give a big Boost to your site in eyes of Google and other search engines as well. It will be counted as high quality backlink and also help in getting high Pagerank |

In general, that's how it used to be, and still is to some extent, but the "nonprofitness" of .org is gradually being eroded. I feel in some cases it's a good idea for a commercial enterprise to use a .org rather than .com. Best of all, you can buy both domains and decide which one to use. Just 301-redirect from the other one to the one you decide is best. That's exacly what SEOmoz.org does! And they are not any kind of non-profit. I think this tactic works well if a company has a strong mission of broad interest and offers a lot of free resources and information (e.g. SEOmoz.org). If you only get a .org domain without the .com and the redirect, you will possibly find, alas, that people looking for you will type in your domain name with .com extension, and find someone else. The vast majority of users think everything is .com. Which is why even Wikipedia.org owns Wikipedia.com and 301s from there to the main domain. P.S. I fully agree it makes no difference for SEO purposes, and thank hyphens-in-domain make no SEO difference (in fact, they work better for users in the longer domain names that might otherwise be harder to read).
