Should I have a custom error page?

Would it hurt SEO and ranking?

It will not hurt your SEO ranking at all but help your visitors for sure.
Competing on Internet require something more than a website and that is Search Engine Optimization :

Actually, it's the opposite effect. A custom 404 page can help GREATLY. And here's why: Instead of nasty 404 errors, you can have a custom 404 page that redirects to a particular error page, such as; creating a nice HTML page with a sitemap type link structure that says "Oops, your page was moved, click the links below to find what you're looking for:".

This does two things (from my experiences atleast) - a.) I no longer have ANY 404 or broken links report in my GWT and b.) (more importantly), I've noticed my 404 page has more visits than the next leading page on our website - which means we have not lost any customers due to bouncing off of a nasty default 404 page rendered by IE for firefox- I was able to capture those users and redirect them to a page that might hopefully make a conversion.

Custom 404 page = HUGE importance in my books after seeing this.

On any site having a custom 404 is always far more user friendly and is bound to keep a certain % of users on the site. A must in my eyes also

    Yes, helps with User Friendliness.

But it also helps keep GBot on track with your site! Instead of stopping at a 404 it'll continue moving.

How does the 404 error page keep the bot moving?
Frankly, I wonder who Frank is and why he has his own adverb.

I could be mistaken, but GBot has links to follow versus plain text to read, no?

Custom 404 pages are specifically for users.

As for bots, as soon as they receive an HTTP status of 404, they will ignore the page and never request for its content.

However, if your 404 pages returns an HTTP 200 status, the page will be indexed.

Yes as ProSeo stated, it is a great move, just be sure to make sure the custom error page returns teh correct header.

I always use either .htaccess, or on IIS I use the custom error page module in the site administration (on IIS7 you can use web.config file). Its really easy, and highly effective.

You can have whatever you want in your error pages, but I usually keep it simple around a basic site template (see wordpress error pages for a good example of simple)

Also check out what Google says about custom error pages: http://www.google.com/support/webmas...y?answer=93641
