Should/how I remove domain from Google?

I have a bit of a problem. My client has the .com and the .co.uk of their business name. Their web site is visible from the one hosting account when you visit either the .com or .co.uk.

Google has been listing both the .com and the .co.uk and the site has obviously been penalised for duplicate content. The client wants to use the co.uk name. I've set up 301 re-directs for each web page in the .htaccess file so anyone visiting for example.... w ww.clientname.com/about.html gets pushed to w ww.clientname.co.uk/about.html.

Google still lists the .com domain though. Should I use the Google remove tool to remove the .com althogether?
Will Google get confused and also remove the .co.uk?

The Google remove tool says "We'll accept your removal request only if the page returns a true 404 error via the http headers." - the site won't return a 404 error will it - so how can I remove the clients .com from Google??

You *could* do this through the Robots.txt file

You would need two distinguish between the two domains and do this dynamically!

This has worked for me. Locate right under the <head> tag:
