Are the SERP advantages to structured data

I understand that structured data tags, such as the tag sets from schema.org, help search engines to identify and understand information on the page.

From what I can see, Google uses these tags to extract data from sites and populate its own sidebars and search responses.

Is there an actual SEO benefit (i.e. getting better position in search results) from tagging structured data?

IMHO you are merely creating canonical issues repurposing the same content as both categories and tags even if there is just one of each.

Best to use one or the other, never both, and never repeat the same content EVER!

I don't believe that Google currently uses the structured data as a ranking signal (i.e. you don't get a better rank simply by implementing it), but rich results in the SERPs can definitely increase your CTR, so if you have a website on which it makes sense to implement Schema.org (like reviews, prices, local business, etc.), I would.

Yes, I understand that there may be some business value in tagging content, but I was wondering specifically about the SEO value. What you've just said matches my assumptions. Thanks!

Did you mean this for another thread? Doesn't seem to make sense here.

I think fathom may have confused the word 'tags' with WordPress' tag function, which does something similar to the categories function and could (possibly?) create duplicate content issues.

We had a talk and shared some articles back and forth last month about structured data, snippets, and rankings - might be relevant to this discussion too! Good stuff begins with Ann's post, #21 What did Matt Cutts and John Muller say?
