    Search voice or ordinary search?

    Hi guys

Is there any difference in the SERP results if you do a search voice or a search typing? Thanks

    Hi Universo,
There should not be different SERPs on mobile, tablet, desktop:

If typed and spoken search queries were the same
If search was from the same location
If search history tracking was enabled and the same on all devices

It's unlikely all parameters would be the same, hence results are likely to be different in practice.

    Hi John,

    I hope you're well.

Have you got evidence to back this up?

Why would Google mention switching to a mobile-first index if they're already the same anyway?

    Hi Matt1966,
I'd say this is the most dramatic change to how G works since it was first created.

G can only use one index to analyse web pages. It is still using its desktop index but reportedly rolling out and testing its mobile index.

The point is, there can be major differences in the HTML code and content of a page formatted for mobile viewing vs. the HTML code for a desktop viewed web page.

The page layout can be very different and this includes the site navigation links, the site structure and it's content. Consider how "link juice" is passed through a website. It will likely be completely different for a desktop vs. a mobile web page.

Then there is page content. It seems some mobile site pages have been published with short content versions of web pages for mobile phone viewing.

G's ranking algo will need to have been dramatically re-written for the change to a mobile based version of web pages.

The thing with Voice search vs desktop (keyboard search) is the query itself.

The following is just an exemple I didn't run any test in english, but I did in French
If you say "ok google" crocodile definition or type crocodile definition directly in Google then you should have the same results, howether you won't query in the same way with voice or keyboard.

From what I noticed in such a situation a user will search for

Crocodile definition on a keyboard but will query for what is a crocodile on voice search.

In this case results can vary. One thing you can notice is that you have more answer box for voice search type queries. So yes results can vary on voice search but it is due to the query itself not to the technology behind it.

Interesting! I’ve always wondered what will
Happen with things like Alexa “Alexa who is a local newborn photographer” - right now I don’t get an answer for it - but in the future I wonder if I will and if the paid ads will be suggested over organic ads.

I'm not sure I understand the difference between paid ads and organic ads but if you meant organic results, this is already the case. You can create an ad for mobile that will show only for user within a certain range of your shop (eg) and display when someone queries for alexa.

Ordinary search focuses on keyword terms and how your website ranks for them. Voice search tends to focus more on searching in a conversational way, sometimes making a keyword focus less important in search. Using voice search could potentially cause completely different websites to rank than if a user searched the traditional way.
