    SEO and using referral ID's

I was wondering if let's say someone on my marketing team is doing link exchanges for seo but he wants to use his Referral ID (so he gets credit for his work), will that effect SEO?

    example:

    1) getting a link to my site with keywords "xxxx" and it points to mydomainname.com.

    2) getting a link to my site with keywords "xxxx" and it points to mydomainname.com/ref_id=12

will both of those cases have the same SEO effect on mydomainname.com?

    thanks!

It would count the same toward the domain of the site I believe as long as the variable on the end would naturaly give the same page.

    I suggest using ?1 ?2 etc...

Who is the boss on this job?

If I was the boss the links would hit the root URL... no reefer BS.

I would not take the chance of splitting the value of those links between different URLs.

There is a chance that google will understand that the root page is the same as the referral and count the links for the root page. But why would you risk? Because of the employee?

Would you mind to test it? If so, let us know.

Google treats each unique URL as a separate page and is not very good at attributing the links to other pages...

That is why so many sites have trouble with www, non-www, and index.* which all point to the same page.

IMO Google will see multiple links as duplicate content and discount the the URLs --- at worst they may be seen as sneaky redirects (doorway pages) and get you banned.

If you do a site:www.sitename.com in google you will probably see that both the original url and the one with referal ID are indexed. So I think, though I could be wrong still, Google perceives each url as a separate entity.

I have the same problem with my company but I couldn't do anything about it because the IDs are needed for Omniture tracking.
