Question Search box for site on SERP

I have seen some search results bring up that individual sites search box so the user can search that site, from the google serp page.

Here is a good example:

http://www.google.com/search?q=pricegrabber&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GBfficial&client=firefox-a

Any ideas how to get google to pick up your search box?

It's a new feature of Google Search. It is actually to help visitors to search in the internal sections of any particular site. This feature is totally depends on Google. If they think that your site is eligible for this kind of search box, then they will put that.

Till now I found this kind of search boxes with the sites like wikipedia,National Geographic, ivillage and other like these organisations.
Now I think you can understand the standard of this search box.

True...we have a competitor site that has the search box...whats interesting is that if anything we have much more content and wider audience then they do. However, they have been around a couple of years longer.

This is also a rather hard topic to search google for to find more info about as search google for 'search results site search' can bring up anything and everything related to searching google.

I wonder, would your site get good ranking position in the SERP if you have those search box.?

Perhaps it depends on how many people use the search box. Maybe the % of visitors using it in regards to the total no. of visits has a part to play. Do they find what they are looking for when they also search using your box? whats the bounce rate like?

I have contemplated doing this for a while. it would also be a good idea in terms of finding out what people are really looking for on your website, so it could open the door to new terms. Would also possibly help with cutting down the bounce rate of a page if they did go onto it from the correct term searched.

It appears its shows only if you search for a website's name as well. I was just wondering if there was something needed to be included in meta or sitemap or something to point out where your search is.

Not really, I quoted to new_seo's post although i forgot to place his text where he referred a few sites those display that box..

thats just one factor I can think off, However, I checked many other websites including BBC, they dont have it.. so its not the factor but can be a factor to it..

Another myth or reality , I dont know but, is the use of Google search appliance for internal searches by the brands : http://www.google.com/enterprise/gsa/

And perhaps may be when google checks out that a visitor might need to refine their query..

But All those are speculations.. Thats Algorithimic I suppose..

Google provides this search box to facilitate further search on a website. So it has something to do with search volume for a website. A website which is being searched for several hundred thousands variations of a brand name/domain name gets this search box. This is just my speculation.
