    SE Friendly URL Question

I'm converting URLS that look like this index.cfm?mode=5 to look like this index.cfm/mode/5 . The script I'm using allows you to add the extension of your choice at the end or leave it blank as in the above example so here's the question, is there any difference to G between these:

    index.cfm/mode/5

    index.cfm/mode/5.html

I'm not sure if the 2 extensions in the second example will give the SE's trouble.

    Thanks

    Laura

theres really no huge difference between any of these:

    index.cfm?mode=5
    index.cfm/mode/5
    index.cfm/mode/5.html

are you really only dealing with one variable?
....or is that just your example?

Really there's between 4 and 6 variables I just didn't feel like typing them out.

Than if your dealing with 4 to 6 variables than

    index.cfm/mode/5
    index.cfm/mode/5.html

is the best method. Both will work. Avoid URLs with alot of "=" and "&" . But you already know that since your converting your URLs

I see what your saying PK

This getting to be a big pain in the butt because I used the parameter url.id throughout the site so I'm starting to question if it is really worth it.

If you do a search for Wireless Phone a fairly competitive search term number 9 has a URL like this
    Code:
    http://www.circuitcity.com/cs_contentdisplay.jsp?b=b&c=2&incat=-8581&com.broadvision.session.new=Yes&ct=0&BV_SessionID=@@@@1476929819.1081312307@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccdadclefmlejdcfngcfkmdffhdffo.0

This URL is filled with variables, maybe it's because it's from Circuit City.

Non parametric URL's are compeltely spiderable but PR has a problem getting in there (It takes longer) and spidering is generally slower. It seems that spiders have to come back a few times before they get the jimmy's up to tackle the URL. I tracked the bots on my forum (Where I leave the Params) vs the SE's friendly archive (Which is basically stock except a few hacks) and bots went in more often and much deeper on average with the SE friendly URL's so yes there is a benefit, but no its not absolutely necessary
Webmasters who spend their energies upholding the spirit of the basic principles [Of Google] will provide a much better user experience and subsequently enjoy better ranking than those who spend their time looking for loopholes they can exploit. Google.com

The Circuit City URL above has a PR0 where the Circuit City Index site has a PR8 so I can see the passing PR problem unless of course it's a new page

What search engine??? Google or Yahoo?

It does matter at times HOW dynamic your site is. If most of the URL is reerral codes and such than you can get away from it. Hell Yahoo has 6000 copies of my homepage indexed. Same page all with a different session id.

    Code:
    www.circuitcity.com/ cs_contentdisplay.jsp?c=2&b=b&incat=-8581

the other params are added after the click for session ids and referrals. My urls look fine in google until you clickon them too. than tracking, session id's and other params are added by my scripting language.
