Redirect from www.mysite.com to mysite.com?

My new site was submitted to Google as http://mysite.com. I'm not really sure what the deal is with the whole "www" thing and how it affects anything.

So I just ran my site through "websitegrader.com" and one of the things it said was:

Quote:
Permanent Redirect Not Found

Search engines may think mysite.com and www.mysite.com are two different sites. You should set up a permanent redirect (technically called a "301 redirect") between these sites. Once you do that, you will get full search engine credit for your work on these sites.

For example, mysite.com seems to have 14 inbound links whereas www.mysite.com has N/A inbound links. By correctly configuring a permanent 301 redirect, the search rankings might improve as all inbound links are correctly counted for the website.

Does this mean I should make a redirect from www.mysite.com to mysite.com? Or the other way around?

it's also my problem but i think for more hassle free, i using this format
[http://] + [www.] + [website url name] + [.com] + optional extensions.
just a suggestion.

It's up to your personal preference which one you go with, but you definitely need to choose a single version.

Good to know. If it's six and two threes I think I'll go with http://mysite.com since this is the link I've been working on so far.

So now I'm confused again. I went to my CPanel redirects and it only gives me the option to redirect from http://mysite.com.

Is www.mysite.com a name I have to purchase and then add on to my domain? If I enter www.mysite.com into a browser my site comes up anyway - so what's going on? Is there a chance that my host sets up this redirect automatically? I'm sorry, I don't know much at all about this whole area.

I would suggest that if almost all the pages of your website is indexed with non www version then you can go with the same. if u redirect the www version then this might take some time to re-index you site. Also u need to redirect all the pages form non www to www version to their respective pages.
