Redirect 301, 404 or 410?

I've changed the layout of my site and deleted a large number of completely unrelated pages. For these unrelated pages I've created redirect 410 in htaccess. I've also submitted URL removal requests to Google for these pages.

Those that have moved location on the site I've redirected 301.

Is this the right thing to do? Should I have redirect 301'd all my deleted pages to my homepage or because they were unrelated to the site theme I've done the right thing?

Cheers

My personal opinion? I would 301 them all to the closest relating page or the homepage. I'm not a pro, but this isjus my opinion since nobody else has replied yet.

Technically you should go with 410, but if you had some inbound links to those pages 301 may work a tiny bit better in terms of saving you link juice.

Yup! This will not only prevent the wastage of link juice to your internal pages but will also prevent the loss of bookmark traffic or traffic from social media websites where your pages might be added.

410 is not a redirect, it is a server response code to state that the URI/URL/Page is Gone.

It states its gone and not to ask for it again because the answer will be the same the next time.

Personally I never use this code, I just 301 everything to the rootdomain once it is gone.
