Ranking in various version of Google.

Hi all,

Let's say you are trying to rank for a specific keyword "blabla", in french. As you all know, in french there are google.ca (french version), google.fr, google.be, google.ch and others...

However, my website is for the french canadian market (quebec), so I must rank well in google.ca. Other engines may be helpful but that is not my main target. I've created a certain number of links in belgium, france and other countries, but not so much in canada because of lack of potential partners...

Now, I'm better ranked in the countries I've got backlinks from than in canada, eventhough my keywords, my server are located in Canada.

My interpretation is that since Canadian websites do not link to me that much, google do not think I'm useful for the canadian market. Is that right? What's your opinion?

If your site is hosted on a server in Canada then Google will geo-locate you there.

The reason you are not ranking you highly is that maybe there is more competition for the desired keywords in Canada but not in the other countries.

Ok, Let me precise a bit:
My competition is also hosted in canada, target same keywords, have links in european countries (france, switzerland, belgium). Also, I can tell you my keywords are including a canadian city name like montreal... So the only thing that I could come up with may be the fact that I seem to have more BL in europe than them...
