Random SEO email advice - are they right??
So an SEO email came through yet again but i felt the need to challenge this particular one just to see what they had to offer our site.
I know SEO well enough to know when someone is BS'ing their way to my pocket. However the guy came back with one good point, although his comment about a non-www not being great for SEO and my dead links really didn't do much for me, his comment about us chasing after the highly competitive term 'online bingo' did. he suggested that we go after the longer tail of keywords as the site is still very young and it is a highly competetive environment, which i agree but and am aware of this but we have always thought that we should chase the main term from the word go and when the time comes we will get ranked for our main terms... Does anyone have some advice, insight into this? bearing in mind that whilst we are trying to get ranked for a competitive term we are still doing quite well for the individual brand names that we promote on the site so all is not lost. i just thought i would ask for some advice, tips from you as he did put a question mark in my head Thoughts? |

You are correct.
Any SEO blabbing on about useless stuff could sometimes, by accident, cough up a decent tip. Heck, even a typing monkey will accidentally type an existing word some day. If not in English, then maybe in Swahili. But yes, always make sure you're targetting your main phrase, but don't forget to garnish your inbound links' anchor texts with the long tail extras. They won't hurt your rankings for the main phrase too much (which will likely be unimpressive yet anyway), but they will do wonders for your long tail rankings. In short: don't make all your inbound links look like 0nline bing0, but subtly add some other keywords as well - depending on what people tend to search for. 0nline bing0 g@mes is a step in the right direction. Try some more

Long-tail can be very very very effective for a site just starting out, it can help fund your greater aim and also create a larger web presence without taking a terrible long time. Long-tail keywords generally can be acquired within a short period of time and are generally very easy to keep.

Now with regards to creating effective anchor text for the link building to chase the longer tail by adding key terms on top of my main terms that my research has proven will generate traffi..... is it also worth doing this with my internal links, header 1 tags, page titles etc?

Oh yes. Would be even nicer if you could vary the internal links depending on the pages they appear on.
