    Quantity or Quality links?

We all know that the quality of the link is very important but what about the quantity?

If I sell fragrances and I link to a gambling website and they link back, does this increase my rank in the search engines?

What if my website link is in a link directory with all different kind of links compare to a cateorgy page called fragrances or shopping? Does this effect it at all?

    Any feedback would be great!

Google gives all links a value it is never less than 0.

having said that non relevant links are pprobably pretty close to the zero.

Recips links from relevant sites still have value but the value is dependent on many variables. ie amount of links on page, relevance of site, relevance of page, trust rank etc.

bottom line - relevant oneway links from high trusted sites the best

oneway links from anywhere not a bad thing but may not help much

unrelated reciprical links probaly cost you far more than you gain.

put your efforts into oneway links

links from relevant sites better thabn irrelevant directory links

I'd go for quality links rather than quantity. 10 one-way links from relevant sites is more valuable than 1000 reciprocal non-relevant links.

And if I get a good amount of quality links, then nothing like it. Google gives very little value to non-relevant links and can also have a bad impression about your site for garnering irrelevant links.

You need to crerate link bait

read the post by GarytheScubaguy in this thread on ideas to create link bait

As for 'cost you more than you gain' irrelevant links IMO may hurt your trust rank in google this is probably more important than your pagerank in derterming your SERP. Bu5t just concetrate on quality, related links. Cant go wrong then.

since technical aspects all have said, i would like to add a small line, Quality ofcourse, when u try to rank high in SERPS, But quantity matters when u become a PR freak..

He means you dont get the value from the link, worth the effort put in to get it.

Yes don't waste your time with irrelevant reciprocal links like 95% of those people in LinkMetro, LinkMarket and all of those other link exchange hubs.

I keep putting this link up (probably four times in the past four weeks) but READ THIS and you should begin to understand the reason why irrelevant reciprocal links are of little value and/or could devalue the trust of your site.

    excellent post europa.

i have removed all my links that aren't related to fragrances. the only question now is that directory websites (dmoz, etc...), some ask for a link back. would this put a strain on my position in search engine results?

No....links back to directories is standard practice. You'll do best over time making sure the co-citation from "incoming links" is in place.

I have my own system for promoting site, here it is. To be in the top position:
10 quality links with www, with anchor.
10 quality links without www, with anchor.
20 - 40 links with www, with anchor, not quality.
20 - 40 links without www, with anchor, not quality.
May be, it'll help to you.
