Posting long articles: 1 long page or multiple pages?

We have a series of articles on our site which have been designed above the fold, with a continued/next link.

Is this is a mistake? Is it better to place the whole article on one long page? I have heard the Goog algo likes depth... 500 to 1,000 words... is this true? My intuition says make it as easy for the spider as I can, so put it all on one page... but it is already published a multi-page format so I am seeking to confirm deny this theory.

If this is not a problem are there any pointers, say a link title/naming convention that the spiders have no problem with? Is there an accepted linking strategy that gives ensures a multi-page article full points for its depth?

I have seen the multipage/next format on a lot of major news sites but I assume they have a lot more authority with G.

Thoughts? Thanks!

I would prefer one long page. Long informative articles have higher probability of getting backlinks and attracting long tail keywords. This is my own personal experience.

I used to break my articles into multiple pages then consolidated a couple and found the traffic shot up.... also their ability to attract links shot up.... and their rankings shot up.

Lots of my articles now are 2000 to 4000 words with lots of images. I only break them up when there are MAJOR search terms to target separately and each of those terms could support a major article.
